A recent newspaper article reported on striking new research from NYU School of Global Public Health suggesting that worrying about getting older, fearing future health problems, may actually accelerate aging at cellular level.
Worrying about getting older may not just trouble the mind. It may accelerate aging itself.
In a study of more than 700 women participating in the long-running project, researchers found that those who felt more anxious about aging showed signs of faster biological aging in their blood. Using advanced “epigenetic clocks”, tools that measure how quickly the body is aging at a molecular level. The study revealed that fears about declining health were strongly linked to a faster ticking biological clock. Interestingly, worries about appearance or fertility did not show the same effect.
Mariana Rodrigues, lead author, explained, aging anxiety may not be just a passing psychological concern. It may leave measurable marks on the body itself. The stronger the fear of illness and physical decline, the stronger the signal of accelerated biological aging.
While the researchers caution that the findings do not prove direct cause and effect, the study reinforces something profound that the mind and body are deeply intertwined. Chronic psychological stress has long been associated with changes in how genes are expressed.
Anxiety about aging itself may be part of that.
Empower your mind, strengthening our mindset, reframing fear, and cultivating psychological resilience may be more than feel-good strategies. They may be part of protecting our long-term biological health.
Aging is inevitable. Fear and Anxiety does not have to be.
